A legendary Corpus Christi festival dating back to the 14th century
The Corpo de Deus, or Coca de Monção, is Monção’s most iconic and historic festival, celebrated since the end of the 14th century. The highlight is the solemn Corpus Christi procession through the streets of the town, followed by the legendary battle between São Jorge (Saint George) and the Coca, a dragon figure representing evil.
After the procession gathers at the Main Church, crowds move to the amphitheatre in the Souto, where the tournament takes place. São Jorge, the rider representing good, and the Coca, an elaborate dragon figure representing sin, engage in a stylized combat that endures until the victory of São Jorge through his ability to deliver sharp blows. The festival perfectly blends the sacred and the profane, with religious ceremonies, music, traditional food, and intense community celebration.
