Monção’s largest and most beloved religious and cultural festival
The Festa em Honra à Virgem das Dores is Monção’s most important annual celebration, drawing thousands of visitors to the historic border town every August. The five-day festival centers around the veneration of Nossa Senhora das Dores (Our Lady of Sorrows), with a powerful blend of religious devotion, traditional culture and popular celebration.
The program includes a solemn religious procession through the old town, traditional ethnographic parades, folk music, fireworks, and major concert performances. The 2026 edition features performances by D.A.M.A, Generation ABBA tribute, Orquestra Belcanto Show, Raya Real, and Grupo Kalhambeke. The festival atmosphere permeates Monção’s historic streets with food stalls, fairground rides, and late-night celebrations.
