Getting There

Drive to Barbeita, Monção — about 5 minutes from Monção town centre. The river area (Praia Fluvial) is signposted. Park nearby and walk down to the water. Simple as that.

What to Expect

Large granite boulders and flat stone slabs line the water, creating natural swimming pools and perfect spots for stretching out in the sun. The water is calm and clear, the setting is natural and simple — no big facilities, no crowds, just the river and the stones.

There are grass areas for picnics along the banks, and the shade of overhanging trees when you need a break from the sun. It's the kind of place where you lose track of time.

Tips

  • Bring a picnic, towels, and sunscreen — there are no shops or cafes at the river.
  • The water is refreshing but can be cold, especially early in the season. Best from June to September.
  • Great for families — shallow areas near the banks are safe for kids to splash around.
  • Combine with a visit to Monção's old town for dinner afterwards. Walk the walls, grab a bite.
  • Water shoes are helpful for walking on the rocky riverbed.
