Getting There
Deep in Peneda-Gerês National Park. From Arcos de Valdevez, take the N202 north through Soajo and continue to Peneda. The road is scenic but winding — allow 1.5 hours. Park near the sanctuary.

1. Sanctuary Arrival
The first view of the sanctuary carved into the mountainside is breathtaking — a monumental Baroque staircase with Passion chapels leading up to the church. Take a moment to absorb the scale of this remote pilgrimage site.
2. Climb the Staircase
Follow the zigzag Baroque stairway lined with chapels depicting the Passion of Christ — similar to Bom Jesus in Braga but wilder and more remote. The climb rewards you with increasingly dramatic views across the valley.
3. Village & Espigueiros
Explore the tiny granite hamlet of Peneda with its cluster of espigueiros — traditional raised grain stores unique to the Minho. These stone and granite structures have been in use for centuries.
4. Loop Trail
Follow the marked loop trail through oak forests and granite landscapes around the sanctuary — about 6–7 km with moderate elevation. The trail winds through some of the most unspoilt terrain in the national park.
