Getting There

Póvoa de Varzim is about 1 hour south of Monção via the A3/A28 motorway. The beachfront is centred around Avenida dos Banhos.

The Itinerary

Early Morning — Run on the Orla

Hit the beachfront promenade at sunrise. The Avenida dos Banhos runs along a 9-12 km sandy beach — flat, paved, perfect for a morning run. Pass the traditional azulejo tile panels depicting Póvoa's fishing heritage. 5-10 km out and back, sea breeze, empty beach.

Morning — Beach Time

Pick a spot on the wide sandy beach. Relax, swim, read. The beach stretches for kilometres so you can always find a quiet spot even in summer.

Lunch — M.A.M.M.A Osteria

Head to M.A.M.M.A Osteria (Avenida dos Banhos 160) for award-winning Italian pizza and fresh pasta, paired with a good bottle of wine. Authentic Italian gastronomy right on the beachfront. Open for lunch 12:00–15:00, closed Tuesdays.

Afternoon — Gelato at Mona Lisa

Walk down the promenade to Gelataria Mona Lisa (Avenida dos Banhos 252) for artisanal Italian gelato. Scoop from ~€1.80. Sit on the promenade and watch the ocean.

Tips

  • Everything is on the same avenue (Avenida dos Banhos) — no car needed once you arrive.
  • Bring sunscreen and a towel.
  • M.A.M.M.A Osteria is closed on Tuesdays — plan accordingly.
  • Early morning is the best time for running before the beach fills up.
  • About 1h drive from the Monção/Melgaço area, or take the train from Viana do Castelo.
