41.9667° N, -8.3667° WThis shortened version of the PR2 AV trail gives you the best of Sistelo's terraced landscapes without committing to the full 20km circuit. You follow the same iconic trail up through the socalcos to Padrão village, then return via the Rio Vez valley path. It is a satisfying half-day hike with all the signature views.
Start in the heart of Sistelo village. Pick up the PR2 AV trail markers (yellow and red blazes) near the Interpretive Centre. The morning light is ideal for this stretch, casting long shadows across the terraces below.
The trail climbs steadily through the socalcos — Sistelo's famous terraced hillsides. These hand-built agricultural terraces are centuries old and still farmed in places. The scale is remarkable: tier after tier stepping down the valley. Follow the marked path and resist the temptation to shortcut across the terraces.
After roughly 5 kilometres of climbing, you reach the granite hamlet of Padrão. This is your turnaround point on the shortened route. Take a break here, enjoy the elevated views back over the valley, and explore the quiet stone lanes before heading back down.
Rather than retracing your exact steps, follow the alternative descent along the Rio Vez valley path. This lower route runs closer to the river and offers a different perspective on the terraces from below. The path is gentler on the knees and shaded in places.
The trail loops back into Sistelo village, completing a satisfying circuit. You will have covered roughly 10 kilometres with 600 metres of elevation — enough to feel you have earned that cold drink in the village.
